Ford Motor Company thinks you will. That’s why they’ve made an option for the best selling Ford Fusion to include an upgrade option in 2013 that will cost you $295 if you go for it.
The option is an auto start-stop feature. Ford isn’t the first automaker to introduce this feature. Other cars that have had the auto start-stop feature include:
- Toyota Crown
- Several Volkswagen models
- More than one BMW vehicle model
While several vehicle manufacturers have tested some version of the auto start-stop feature, it has been most popular in Europe and among the luxury vehicle class. It has in fact increased fuel efficiency in vehicles where it was featured. Ford is banking on buyers of its Fusion model being willing to pay extra for the feature. One thing is for sure, though. The $295 option fee is a lot cheaper than the $5,000-plus you’ll spend on the hybrid alternative.
Consumers are becoming increasingly more conscious of fuel efficiency due in large part to the increase in fuel prices at the pump.
The auto start-stop feature is a great feature for city driving where drivers stop often at stop lights and during rush hour traffic. A timed delay causes the engine to shut off automatically and restart upon certain driver triggers. The feature has resulted in a 10% increase in fuel efficiency in vehicles across the board.
